Adobe’s third-quarter earnings report reads like a love letter to its own success: record revenue, a billion monthly users, and a stock price that’s still floating somewhere in the stratosphere. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find a company that’s great at making money but less great at holding onto it. Cash flow is down, and Adobe’s wallet seems to have sprung a leak. What’s going on?

The Billion-Dollar Question

Adobe’s Q3 earnings release is a parade of milestones. The company now boasts over a billion monthly active users (MAUs) across its suite of creative and productivity tools, a 150% year-over-year increase in AI-driven Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), and total revenue of $6.76 billion, up 13% from the same period last year [1]. Shantanu Narayen, Adobe’s CEO, called it a "defining moment" for the company, and he’s not wrong. But for all the fanfare, there’s a curious footnote: cash flow from operations dropped to $4.36 billion, down from $5.43 billion in the previous quarter [2].

Where Did the Money Go?

Adobe’s cash flow troubles are a bit of a head-scratcher. The company’s revenue is up, its user base is booming, and its ARR is growing faster than a TikTok influencer. So why is the cash flow shrinking? The answer lies in Adobe’s aggressive spending. The company shelled out $1.56 billion on acquisitions, $180 million on property and equipment, and $80 million on long-term investments [2]. Add to that $6.82 billion in share repurchases, and you’ve got a recipe for a cash flow crunch. Adobe’s CFO, Steve Day, insists the company is "deepening engagement with agentic experiences," but investors might be forgiven for wondering if Adobe is spreading itself too thin.

The Subscription Trap

Adobe’s subscription model is both its greatest strength and its Achilles’ heel. Subscription revenue accounted for 97% of total revenue in Q3, up 14% year-over-year [1]. But this reliance on subscriptions comes with risks. Adobe’s customer base is growing, but so are its costs. The company’s cost of revenue jumped 19% to $763 million, driven by higher subscription-related expenses [2]. And while Adobe’s ARR is impressive, it’s worth noting that 67% of the company’s remaining performance obligations (RPO) are short-term, meaning Adobe will need to keep finding new customers to maintain its growth trajectory [1].

What’s Next for Adobe?

Adobe’s Q3 earnings paint a picture of a company at the top of its game, but also one that’s walking a tightrope. The billion-user milestone is a testament to Adobe’s dominance in the creative software market, but it also raises questions about how much growth is left. Adobe’s focus on AI-driven tools and agentic experiences is promising, but it’s also expensive. Investors will be watching closely to see if Adobe can balance its ambitious spending with the need to maintain healthy cash flow. In the meantime, Adobe’s Q4 targets suggest the company isn’t slowing down: it expects total revenue of $6.80 billion to $6.85 billion and non-GAAP earnings per share of $6.30 to $6.35 [1].
